Preparing for the New NIL Era

As we continue to redefine the new era of college sports, a landmark legal settlement in the case House v. NCAA is poised to reshape college athletics yet again. The proposed multibillion-dollar agreement would allow schools to pay student athletes directly, ending the long-standing amateur model. It includes a $2.75 billion payout to former athletes (pre-2021) for missed NIL opportunities and enables schools to share up to $20.5 million annually with current players.

Key changes include replacing scholarship limits with roster caps and establishing a third-party clearinghouse (Deloitte) for NIL deals over $600. While many support the changes, some objectors, including athletes who may lose roster spots, warn of unintended consequences. Judge Claudia Wilken appeared supportive but may suggest modifications like grandfathering current athletes. A decision is expected soon, and if approved, colleges must quickly adapt ahead of the fall season. Legal and legislative battles are expected to continue.

With all of this news, we look ahead to what’s next and how to continue to best prepare our student athletes for success while navigating the new era of college sports. At POLARIS, we believe that it truly begins and ends with education. It is vital that student athletes learn about NIL rules in their state and target colleges/universities, understanding the difference between NIL deals vs. pay-for-play (which now will likely merge under settlements), and prioritizing academic studies since many NIL partnerships value strong academic standing.

POLARIS Student Athlete Consulting is uniquely positioned to support high school student athletes as they prepare for the evolving NIL landscape. One of the most important services we provide is helping athletes develop a strong and authentic personal brand. This includes guiding them on how to use social media effectively, shape their online presence, and how to tell their story in a way that resonates with audiences and potential sponsors. In addition to brand building, POLARIS offers education around NIL rules and compliance, ensuring that student athletes and their families fully understand both state and NCAA guidelines, helping them avoid eligibility risks and make informed decisions.

As athletes begin navigating the college recruiting process, we also help them align their recruiting goals with potential NIL opportunities. This means evaluating not just a school’s athletic and academic fit, but also its NIL infrastructure and support system. With its broad network, POLARIS can connect families with trusted legal, financial, and marketing professionals who can help evaluate and manage NIL deals responsibly.

Beyond NIL strategy, POLARIS places a strong emphasis on life skills and career readiness, drawing from our background in Professional School Counseling. We are committed to developing the whole person, not just the student-athlete, by fostering growth in character, leadership, and personal development alongside academic and athletic success. Through workshops and one-on-one support, athletes gain valuable knowledge in financial literacy, communication, contract negotiation, and media training. These skills help prepare them for the professional expectations that come with being a modern student-athlete. Most importantly, POLARIS serves as a long-term advocate and trusted partner for both the athlete and their family, providing consistent guidance and support as they navigate a complex and rapidly changing landscape.
