Boston University Summer Programs for Pre-College Students

At POLARIS Student Athlete Consulting, we’re always on the lookout for meaningful, challenging, and enriching summer opportunities for high school students, especially those that support both academic and personal growth. One standout option we love to recommend is Boston University’s Summer Term Pre-College Programs. Whether your student is aiming to dive deeper into a specific subject area, get a taste of college life, or even earn college credit, BU has a summer experience that fits the bill.

Why Consider a Pre-College Program?

Pre-college programs are about more than adding a line to your college application. They’re about stepping into a new environment, meeting like-minded peers, exploring new interests, and developing the skills needed to thrive in college. At Boston University, students don’t just sit in a classroom. They participate in discussions, engage in hands-on projects, live in dorms, and experience what it’s like to be a college student in the heart of one of the nation’s top student cities.

Explore BU’s Five Pre-College Program Options

1. High School Honors (6 weeks)
Ideal for rising juniors and seniors, this program allows students to enroll in actual BU undergraduate courses (more than 80 to choose from) and earn up to 8 college credits. Courses are available in person or online, giving students flexibility to learn from anywhere.

2. RISE Internship/Practicum (6 weeks)
For rising seniors with a strong interest in STEM, this program offers the chance to work side by side with BU faculty on real research projects. Whether in a lab setting or through group-based research in computational and data sciences, students gain authentic research experience and mentorship.

3. Academic Immersion (3 weeks)
This program offers focused study in psychology, medicine, business, or creative writing. Students explore their interests through engaging lectures, group discussions, and project-based learning. It is perfect for those ready to deep dive into a potential college major or career path.

4. Summer Challenge (2 weeks)
For rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors, Summer Challenge allows students to select two of 19 available seminars across a wide range of disciplines. It is a great way to explore new subjects, meet motivated peers, and get a taste of campus life.

5. Summer Preview (1 week)
Younger high school students, rising 8th, 9th, and 10th graders, can join this short but impactful program that introduces them to college-style learning in a supportive, low-pressure environment. Students choose a single seminar and enjoy a fun, foundational college preview.

Life on Campus

Students who choose to live on campus stay in BU residence halls with roommates and access to campus dining and social events. Resident program assistants provide supervision and support, creating a safe and welcoming environment. Activities range from harbor cruises and improv shows to outings at Fenway Park and exploring historic Boston neighborhoods.

Even commuter students are encouraged to participate in social events and group activities to help them feel connected and immersed in the community.

Why This Matters for Student Athletes

While BU’s pre-college programs aren’t athletic in focus, they are a fantastic opportunity for student athletes to strengthen their academic profile, build independence, and explore areas of interest outside of sports. Admissions offices and coaches alike appreciate well-rounded students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, time management skills, and the ability to adapt to new environments.

Participating in a program like this can help student athletes grow personally and academically, while also offering a valuable opportunity to explore a college campus and connect with peers from around the globe. While on campus, we also recommend connecting with your regional admissions representative. For our students and families in Austin, your admissions rep is Gabriela Reyes Jusino, Assistant Director. Communicating in advance with both Gabriela and any athletic coaches would be a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate interest and further develop rapport.
