Summer Leaders Experience at West Point

The United States Military Academy at West Point offers the Summer Leaders Experience (SLE), a week-long immersion program designed for high school juniors considering a future at West Point. Led by current cadets, SLE provides participants with firsthand exposure to the academic, military, and social aspects of cadet life. This program allows students to explore the rigorous environment of the academy, helping them assess their fit and interest in pursuing a military career.

From my experience advising student athletes throughout the years, the physical demands of the program were always mentioned in the same light as an intense preseason conditioning program at the varsity level. Although they were stepping away from their sport for the week, the SLE athletic programming and physical training was widely enjoyed by all of my former student athletes.

During SLE, attendees engage in a variety of activities that mirror the experiences of West Point cadets. These include academic workshops, physical training sessions, and military drills. A typical day begins with an hour of PT at 0545 followed by breakfast in the Cadet Mess Hall. Participants then go on to experience all aspects of cadet life while being able to interact with faculty and cadets, until lights out at 2300. This comprehensive exposure aims to prepare prospective applicants for the challenges and opportunities that come with attending West Point.

The program is typically held in June but dates vary from year to year and is open to high school juniors who are U.S. citizens. Participating in SLE not only offers a glimpse into cadet life but also serves as an introduction to the admissions process, as attendees begin their West Point application during the program. While participants do not earn additional points for their West Point application, this early engagement can be advantageous for students aiming to join the ranks of the academy's esteemed corps of cadets. Attending SLE does not impact whether or not a candidate is accepted for admission, however it does provide prospective cadets with an invaluable opportunity to discover if they’re a good fit.
