The United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar

The United States Naval Academy (USNA) offers the Summer Seminar, a six-day immersive program designed for high-achieving high school juniors interested in experiencing life at the Academy. This program provides a comprehensive overview of the rigorous academics, physical training, and leadership development that define the USNA experience. Participants engage in daily physical training, attend workshops led by esteemed faculty, and participate in team-building exercises, all while residing in Bancroft Hall, the Academy's main dormitory. This firsthand exposure allows students to assess their fit for a future at the Naval Academy and a career in service.

The Summer Seminar is held annually in June, with specific session dates varying each year. For instance, the 2025 sessions are scheduled as follows:

  • Session 1: May 31st to June 5th, 2025

  • Session 2: June 7th to June 12th, 2025

  • Session 3: June 14th to June 19th, 2025

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, current high school juniors, and demonstrate superior academic performance, leadership potential, and physical fitness. The application process opened in January, and selections are made on a rolling basis. Early application is encouraged to increase the likelihood of acceptance. The application deadline is March 31, 2025 with all applicants being notified of their status by April 25, 2025.

When I attended the Centers of Influence educator fly-in program in 2018, I had the opportunity to spend 4 days at the Naval Academy. During that time, I was able to speak with countless midshipmen who credited their Summer Seminar experience as a defining moment for them in regards to navigating their post-secondary aspirations. Another commonality many of them made reference to, was how their commitment as student athletes throughout high school prepared them for life at the Naval Academy.

Participating in the Summer Seminar not only offers a glimpse into the life of a midshipman but also serves as an introduction to the USNA admissions process. Attendees begin their official application during the program, receiving guidance on navigating the comprehensive admissions requirements. This early engagement provides a competitive advantage, as students gain valuable insights and firsthand experience that can strengthen their applications. Moreover, the relationships formed with peers and mentors during the seminar often serve as a supportive network throughout the admissions journey and beyond.
